NUGSB students take advantage of Career Week 1

September 30 – November 3, 2017 marks the week when 2 new cohorts of NUGSB students participated in the Career Week 1 which is designed to have students get acquainted with different kinds of industries and various career opportunities.  30 Full-Time MBA students and 34 MSc in Finance students took part in variety of experiences over the course of 1 week which included, workshops, presentations, mock-interviews, professional photo-session and industry panel discussions.

Career Week 1 was presented as an exciting series of industry panel discussions designed to heighten students’ awareness of a variety of career opportunities. Head of Market Analysis Department at Samruk Energy JSC Dauren Sagidulla and Senior Appraisal Manager at Shell company Daniyar Ramatullayev talked about companies involved in the exploration and development of oil or gas in Kazakhstan in general. They gave insights on interesting career opportunities and told about their personal career paths from the very beginning of their careers. 
 
Marketing industry panel discussion featured director of Lattanzio Advisory branch in Astana Dastan Bayakenov, head of TAKITA marketing agency Zinaida Pak and chief marketing officer at Astyk Koimalary Didar Beisenev. The panelists talked about the latest trends in Marketing industry and how latest marketing technologies increase companies performance in general. They also talked about challenges that marketing experts face in day to day lives working for Kazakhstan companies. When it comes to budgets cuts the first expenses that are being cut are usually marketing expenses.
 
Finance industry panel discussion featured Chairman of the Management Board of National Investment Corporation (National Bank) Akylzhan Baimagambetov, head of investment department at Samruk-Kazyna-Invest Yernar Bilyalov, Head of AIFC Bureau for Continuing Professional Development Yernur Rysmagambetov and CEO of Muzan Group, USA Diana Muzan. The panelist talked about the state of financial sector in Kazakhstan and what it is like to work as an financier in general. NUGSB MSF students were particularly interested in the day-to-day job responsibilities of financiers in the companies represented by the panelists. 
 
Entrepreurship industry panel discussion happened to be the last of the series and  featured entrepreneur and general director of “Irrigator Kazakhstan” Murat Akshalov, owner of Happy Cake company Askhat Soltan and entrepreneur, recent NU graduate Ayan Birimzhan. The discussion turned out to be insirational because the panelists could relate to the audience in different ways by telling personal success stories and shared their life motto and challenges they faced during their entrepreneurial “lives.” Each of the panelists shared insights into what it means to be an entrepreneur and what it takes to be successful in life in general.

In summary below are the activites that were covered during the 5 days:
 
-We engaged with industry experts through panel discussions and Info Sessions. A number of companies attended and discussed career opportunities within their own specific industries, as well as within their own companies
 
-Through various panel discussions and interactions students got insider tips on how to start their career and maximize the chances for success while minimizing the risks of failure.
 
-Students had an opportunity to learn more about Oil and Gas, Marketing, Finance, etc. industry trends 
 
-We held a series of workshops aimed to polish those all-important first time impressions during an interview or during a networking opportunity, such as the ‘Elevator Pitch’, ‘Selling Yourself’ and ‘Active Listening’
 
-We organized afternoon Mock Interview sessions with senior staff from Nazarbayev University who gave individual feedback to the students as well interview advice and tips to all class members.
 
Career Week 1 was a success, with many participants — whether students, companies, faculty or staff — expressing their appreciation and overall satisfaction with the program. Preparation for Career Week 2 is underway.
