Strategic vision is like a Northern star in the sky, directing light, indicating the direction for everyone who moves, who wants to achieve something. Where to go is one question. How to get there is the another one. And this is the goal of the strategy – where we are today, where we want to be tomorrow and how will we get there? In general, the answer to the question “how to achieve” is what the strategy is.
Thus, a strategic vision can be a mechanism for bringing a group of people or an organization together around a common goal and serve as the beginning of a dialogue on how to implement the vision, that is, to develop an appropriate strategy for which effective implementation will be required in the future. In this sense, a strategic vision is of intrinsic value.
Chet Borucki, the professor of strategy and management at the Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Business, answers the questions on whether it is possible to learn strategic thinking and what is necessary for this, what is the strategy, Blue Ocean.
– Everyone can improve their ability to think strategically.
An open mind, a readiness to look in the mirror and admit that we are sometimes our own enemy and allow our prejudices to influence our willingness or our ability to see more widely. A person should be able to conduct a thorough situational analysis, see the big picture and connect the dots, discover patterns and opportunities that others may not see.
Examples of effective strategic thinkers are those who have developed disruptive business models, such as the founders of companies like Airbnb, Uber, Coursera, DropBox and others that have become successful from start-ups to billion-dollar companies in a relatively short period of time. We can’t be successful entrepreneurs like the founders of these companies, but we can all become more competent strategic thinkers, applying skills at work and in personal life, Chet Borucki said.
What other qualities and skills should a successful manager have? The associate professor of operations management, Zhijian Cui, answers this question.
Operations management is the right process for coordinating supply and demand both within and between organizations. Any enterprise management has a business process that may or may not be structured in an efficient and optimal way. Knowledge of operations management helps firms to restructure, understand, optimize and improve core business processes. As a result, good operations management is critical to the success of any organization.
Skills and methods of operations management can help managers quickly determine a place in an existing process and develop a strong approach to process improvement. Moreover, it allows managers to think about strategic trade-offs in different business processes, which can also serve as a guide for the development of new business models, says Zhijian Cui.
The skills of strategic thinking and operational management can be learned at workshops and courses at the Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Business, which will be held in May and June this year.
