Exploring Business and International Opportunities: BBA in Eurasian Business Students Meet with a Hong Kong Representative

Students from the inaugural cohort of Nazarbayev University’s BBA in Eurasian Business had the opportunity to meet Mr. Simon Chan, Director-General of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Dubai and an alumnus of the HKUST MBA programme.

Visiting Astana, Mr. Chan took the time to meet with students for an informal conversation about business, career development, and the growing opportunities for cooperation between Hong Kong and Kazakhstan.

As an alumnus of HKUST, Mr. Chan also reflected on the value of the new HKUST–Nazarbayev University collaboration and highlighted the unique cultural and regional dimension of the inaugural cohort, which brings together students from Kazakhstan and China.

The conversation focused strongly on the students’ own ambitions and questions. Mr. Chan discussed the importance of continuously learning, challenging yourself, and developing a broad perspective when building a career in business administration. Students explored which industries and organisations could offer valuable career and internship opportunities, the sectors in Central Asia that are of interest to Hong Kong, and the interdisciplinary skills that will be increasingly important in the business environment.

Students also shared what attracted them to the BBA in Eurasian Business, particularly the opportunity to study across two leading universities, connect with two alumni networks, and gain exposure to career opportunities across two dynamic regions.

The meeting offered students a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world perspectives and to better understand how stronger links between Kazakhstan and Hong Kong can create opportunities for future business leaders.

For the inaugural cohort, experiences like this are an important part of studying at the intersection of two regions — giving students not only knowledge, but also the connections and perspectives to put that knowledge into practice.
