Faculty

Şuhnaz Yılmaz Özbağcı - Professor of International Relations and Dean of the College of Administrative Sciences and Economics at Koç University.

She previously served as Director of the Graduate School of Business and holds a PhD from Princeton University, with postdoctoral studies at Harvard University. She has also held visiting positions at UCLA, Stanford, and Princeton. Her expertise spans international relations, foreign policy analysis, international strategy, diplomatic history, energy politics, and sustainability.

Şuhnaz Yılmaz has published extensively in leading journals and is the author of Energy, Environment and Geopolitics in Eurasia (Routledge, 2024), as well as co-author of the forthcoming The Pursuit of Energy Security in an Insecure World (Oxford University Press).

A recipient of multiple prestigious awards, including the Distinguished Young Scientist Award of the Turkish Academy of Sciences, she is also involved in global academic leadership, serving as a Strategic Board Member of CEMS and contributing to international accreditation and impact initiatives.

Şuhnaz Yılmaz Özbağcı

PhD, Princeton University

Belgin San-Akca - Professor of International Relations and Department Chair at Koç University, Associate Editor of the Journal of Global Security Studies.

Her research focuses on international security and nonstate violence, with particular expertise in proxy warfare, energy security, and patterns of conflict and cooperation. She is a recipient of the Marie Curie Reintegration Grant and has published in leading journals such as Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of Peace Research, and International Studies Quarterly.

She is the author of States in Disguise (Oxford University Press, 2016) and co-author of the forthcoming Energy Security in an Insecure World. Her current research develops new approaches linking energy interdependence to global conflict dynamics and explores how nonstate armed groups reshape international order.

She has held visiting positions at Harvard University, University of California, Davis, and Stanford University, and contributes to leading academic journals and international research communities.

Belgin San-Akca

PHD, University of California

Joep Konings - Dean of the Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Business.

His research focuses on firm dynamism, international macroeconomics, and micro drivers affecting macroeconomic fluctuations. To this end, he makes use of ‘big data’ analytics to answer pressing economic questions.

He has been involved in numerous research projects from the EU, the OECD, the Asian Development Bank and other international institutions and private firms. Konings has published various papers in leading academic journals, such as the American Economic Review, The Review of Economic Studies, Information Systems Research and the Review of Economics and Statistics. Konings has advised various governments on economic policy.

He is a regular guest speaker for private firms, government institutions and Central Banks. He is a research fellow of the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and the director of the Center for Regional Economic Policy (VIVES, KU Leuven).
